Orthodox church in Croatia opens new museum after the old one was destroyed during the war
Released : Thursday, June 08, 2006 9:29 AM
ZAGREB, Croatia-Thirteen years after its museum was blown up during the 1991 Serbo-Croat war, the Croatian Orthodox Church put its icons, manuscripts and other works of art on show Thursday at a new location in Zagreb.
"Like the Phoenix, this exhibit has now been reborn from the ruins of the war," said Bishop Jovan, the head of the Orthodox Church in Zagreb.
He added that the "rich and painful history" of the works exposed there should "serve the peace and the rapprochement" between primarily Roman Catholic Croats and Orthodox Serbs.
Croats and Serbs fought a bloody war in 1991, when the minority Serbs rebelled against Croatia's secession from the former, Serb-dominated Yugoslavia. The war ended in 1995, when Zagreb recaptured the areas the rebels seized in 1991.
As the war raged on, unknown attackers planted a bomb in the Serbian Orthodox Museum in Zagreb, causing extensive damage to the building. Rescued works of art had until now been kept in the church's vaults.
Croatian Culture Minister Bozo Biskupic attended the opening of the new museum in downtown Zagreb, saying that the Croatian government "cherishes the cultural achievements and heritage of all of its minorities."
Even though tensions between Serbs and Croats persist, relations have vastly improved in the past few years. The Croatian government also is trying to boost its protection of minority rights, one of the conditions for its desired membership in the European Union.

THE SUFFERING OF THE SERBS IN SARAJEVO Kazani, 1991 -1993 (6)
TESTIMONIES OF WITNESSES
"...While I was staying in the "Viktor Bubanj" and the Central Prison I happened to spend some time in cells with the members of the so-called 10th mountain brigade com-
manded by Mušan Topalović called "Caco". Among them were Nermin Hatić, Alen Hatić, Sejo and Zijo Kubat, Sejo Kadić and Nermin Narandžić.
For some time these persons thought that I was a Moslem and that I was in prison as a criminal, so, in my presence, they talked freely about their crimes they had committed against the Serbs. They talked that they had taken part in the butchery of the Serbs in Sarajevo in large-scale and they had thrown their corpses at the place called "Kazani", on the slopes of Trebević.
I was taken to hard labour with some of them. On one occasion, when I was digging a canal for electrical installation on the slopes of Trebević with Alen Hatić, he showed me the pit where they had thrown the corpses of the Serbs. I can point out that place even today. He said that that was only one of the places they had thrown the corpses of the Serbs.
During those talks I had the impression that they competed in saying which one of them had committed more crimes. They said that they had usually slaughtered people. They would throw earth over the heap of corpses, and then a layer of new corpses.
Sarija Miralem was one of the guards of the Central Prison and the concentration camp "Viktor Bubanj". He was also a member of Topalović's armed group and a commander of one of their units. He had participated in the crimes against the Serbs in his free time, when he was not on duty in the prison. While they were staying in prison, Sarija was a guard and together with them commented on his participation in the crimes in my presence. He still is employed as a guard in the Central Prison.
They said that Topalović's deputy, Senad Pecar had personally taken part in their crimes, was not arrested and who is now in Sarajevo and is a member of the Moslem army with the rank of colonel.
I also heard these persons talking about the 9th mountain brigade under the command of Ramiz Delalić "Ćele", a well-known killer of Nikola Gardović, also having
taken part in the persecution and the murdering of the Serbs in Sarajevo.
Delalić had personally participated in the programmes of the Sarajevo television where he publicly boasted of his participation in the murder of Nikola Gardović. He was a guest in the television programme together with Minister of the Interior, Jusuf Pušin. They even hugged..."

THE SUFFERING OF THE SERBS IN SARAJEVO Kazani, 1991 -1993 (5)
TESTIMONIES OF WITNESSES
Witness 341/96-1, a student from Sarajevo testifies:
Patriot League and was a member of 110th brigade led by Mušan Topalović called "Caco"..."
Witness 281/96-9, a pensioner from Sarajavo, who left Sarajevo at the beginning of 1996, testifies:
"...I am also familiar with the so-called case Boguševac
or "Kazani" on the mountain of Trebević. Two points where the Serbs were murdered had been established .
At the first pojnt called "Kazani" murders were committed
by slaughtering with an eighty-centimeter-long sword,
whereas at the other point, situated near Kozja Ćuprija, the Serbs were killed by being hit with blunt objects on the heads.
The main perpetrator was Suad Osmanović, the son of Osman from Sarajevo.
This group was sentenced by the District military court in Sarajavo, presided by the president of the council, judge Muhamed Podruga.
During the proceedings, court experts Dobrača llijaš and Žujo Hamzo were questioned.
These court experts claimed that a great number of corpses had been burnt and in the stage of decay so they could not have been identified.
The exact number of the killed Serbs could not be determined, for the murders had been committed since the beginning of the war until January, 1993.
Extremely horrible crimes against the Serbs had been committed by the Moslem organized groups led by Ismet Bajramović called "Ćelo" and Mušan Topalović called "Caco" until their arrest at the end of 1993. They frequently raided the flats of the Serbs and looted their property, taking them away and who would never come back. They even came into prisons and took the imprisoned Serbs under the pretext of making an exchange. But most of them were killed..."

THE SUFFERING OF THE SERBS IN SARAJEVO Kazani, 1991 -1993 (4)
TESTIMONIES OF WITNESSES
Witness 344/96-3, a doctor who was born and who worked in Sarajevo testifies:
The members of the unit led by Mušan Topalović "Caco" and Ramiz Delalić "Ćelo" were imprisoned at the time. They openly talked about the crimes they had committed against the Serbs in Sarajevo.
Amir Jusović called "Fifa", Ertan Hukelić called "Eco" and "The Marble", who had an artificial eye, and "Čipša" talked a lot about the crimes they had committed in the place called "Kazani" near Sarajevo.
"Čipša" himself said that 124, out of 138 identity cards with Serbian names were found at the place "Kazani".
During my stay in prison, the sentences were suspended to most of them and they were afterwards released.
Prior to my arrest in the autumn of 1993 I learnt that my school mate's parents Vaso and Jelena Lavrijev and Jelena's mother Olga Šćiban had been taken from their flat at 31 Pionirska St. The attempt of their friends and neighbours to find out what had happened to them was futile.
Only during my stay in the Central Prison did I find from the members of Topalović and Delalić's unit that Eso - "The Marble" had been responsible for the murder of the Lavrijev family, and who himself talked about personally having killed the members of the Lavrijev family in the place called "Kazani", Vasil by slaughtering, whereas Jelena had been tortured to death, as he had put a pickax into her vagina, after which, as far I can remember, he burnt her.
I suppose that the members of the Lavrijev family were liquidated because their son had a radio station in his flat as a radio-amateur, so they were charged that they had been maintaining contacts with the Serbs.
I learnt from many different persons in Sarajevo that the Moslems had killed 400 Serbs in the tunnel Vratnik on Bembaša.

THE SUFFERING OF THE SERBS IN SARAJEVO Kazani, 1991 -1993 (3)
TESTIMONIES OF WITNESSES
Witness 806/95-18 states:
"...While being in cell number 2 in the Central Prison in Sarajevo (from April 1993 until September 1995) I spent some time there together with Hatić Alen and Kapetanović Emirwho were members of the unit led by Topalović Mušan called "Caco" and his deputy Delalić Ramiz called "Ćelo 2". I talked with Kapetanović Samir and Kulenović Haris in the sitting-room. Hatić was in prison for robbery, Emir and Samir-for the armed robbery and murders of some children, with Haris Kulenović - as an accomplice.
I talked with Hatić and Kapetanović and they spoke about their participation in many activities as members of the above mentioned unit, capturing many Serbs in Sarajevo and taking them to dig trenches. Then, according to their words, many Serbs were killed.
Their corpses were taken to the place called "Kazani", above the settlement Bistrak in the municipality of Stari Grad. They were thrown into the "Kazani" in layers, as they explained, first 30 - 40 corpses and then a layer of lime, and then a layer of earth and so on. There were ten layers according to their words..."
